The Time-Traveller and The Soldier // Steve Rogers

SOMEWHERE TOO FAR FOR US TO FIND

Sitting in the EMH Team common room, her legs tucked under her, Amy turned a page in the yellowing astronomy book in her lap. She'd found the ancient gem in the TARDIS library and after much pleading and puppy eyes, the Doctor had allowed her to borrow it. Being the absolute star-nut that she was, this loan had excited her to no end.

It had been wonderful to see her Raggedy Doctor again. The visit hadn't been as relaxing as she'd hoped it was going to be, although adventures with the Doctor were rarely were. But it had been wonderful nonetheless. This time he'd taken up babysitting. Thankfully not human children, though she was sure that he'd make a brilliant human-child babysitter or preschool teacher. No, he was baby-sitting Adipose. Sentient blobs of walking fat that proved to be more adorable than any human child. And oh how they'd loved him! He'd turned his entire home into an Adipose playground, just to keep the little ones content. Amy smiled at the memory. She bet the TARDIS had loved playing Mum to the little rascals too. She'd even played lullabies for them at nap-time.

But of course he'd had to take them back home. They all had mothers and fathers eagerly waiting for them on Adipose 3. All except one. Gerald, as the Doctor had named him since it was apparently much easier than his real name, was an orphan. Amy, not wanting the child to go to an orphanage, had instantly nominated herself as his new adoptive mother and taken him back to SHIELD with her. She just hoped none of the higher ups would find out about her new baby too soon. She didn't like the idea of having to give him up. He was only a baby after all, and with the likes of Fury, Amy wasn't entirely certain that he'd be very kind to it.

A soft coo broke her attention and looking down she saw her baby Adipose waddling towards her, arms outstretched. He stopped at the couch, jumping up to try and climb up but it was much too high and a look of frustration crossed his face. Giggling, Amy scooped the blob up and settled him on her lap, between her book. Gerald cooed happily in return, snuggling up and promptly dozing off. His soft snores sounded like a cat purring and they made Amy smile fondly at the tiny odd creature.

She carefully turned another page, her eyes flitting over the particulars about Amanopia, home planet of a race blue humanoids that traded body parts. She felt her wanderlust growing again. So many new constellations she had to see, so many new places she now had to visit!

His the sound of his boots hung heavy in the air as he slowly made his way down the empty hall. A hand went to his cowl, tugging it down in a smooth motion before running his hand through his hair, trying to fix it. He could feel sleep pulling at the edge of his consciousness, but the tugs were light and easy to ignore. No longer did he tire like a regular human; he could go for a few more days before the need to sleep really overwhelmed him. It really, really toyed with his sleeping schedule

After returning from a mission, Steve usually went straight home, either to catch up on some rest or to refuel himself after expending so much energy. But home didn't seem like a welcoming place right now. Lately, his nightmares had been getting worse and going back only to experience them again didn't sound very appealing. Maybe if he just spent the night here in the gym and not sleep until tomorrow, he would just fall so far under that he wouldn't remember any nightmares he had.

Steve almost considered going straight to the gym, but it was still pretty early. He didn't want people to know he had pretty much spent the night punching bags or he was sure to get a call from Fury about how he was supposed to be talking to his psychiatrits. Which, he did. But they all just patronized him and acted like he didn't understand anything. It was infiriorating. He was out of time, not stupid.

Figuring he hadn't been to see any of his new team yet, he was hoping to find one in the EMH common room. It had been a while since he had stepped foot in there, but he heard from some other agents that some of his team actually did use it. Steve just hoped it wasn't any of the Avengers. He knew them already, could get in touch with most of them at the drop of a hat. His new team, though, he didn't really know any of them.

He pushed open the door to the room, eyes landing on a pretty red head sitting at the table. He could see an old book spread out in front of her on astronamy, if he read it right. Blue eyes catching on a little grey blob in her lap, Steve was shocked to see it had a face. What in the world? It certainly wasn't the weirdest thing he had seen in the twenty-first century, but it was up there.
"Hello, ma'm. Mind if I join you and your.... um...” Steve knew he was being a little rude, but he just didn't know what to call the grey mass she was cuddling.

Amy turned at the sound of a stranger's voice addressing her. The "ma-am" had caught her off-guard and she'd almost looked around for another person in the room. She really wasn't used to such polite formality. Studying the man before her, a friendly smile crossed her lips. She guessed that by his particular uniform he was one of the Avengers that held such celebrity status around here. Apart from the fact that they were superheroes that had saved New York from an alien invasion, Amy knew zilch about the Avengers. She'd completely missed the big New York battle by several months and so hadn't seen any part of their saving-the-world-though-really-only-New-York heroics.

That had been the month she'd been helping to save the little town of Mercy. And saving dinosaurs on a spaceship. There'd really been not enough time to catch up with what was happening on Earth. And then when the Doctor had left (stranded, in her mind) her and Rory back on Earth, she had given up on following the news. It was all too boring and depressing, plus it just reminded her that she could be far away from all the devastation if only she hadn't been left behind like a forgotten toy.

So apart from the fact that the attractive male must be part of the same new Team that she was now a part of, she had absolutely no idea who he was. Good thing had an over-abundance of curiosity and liked meeting new people.

"Gerald. That's Gerald. They're called Adiposes," she told the man, chuckling softly as she looked down at the snoozing blob before gently prodding him awake. Blearily opening his eyes, Gerald sat up and blinked at the blonde male before looking around and getting his bearings. "Say hello, darlin'." A confused coo left the baby's lips as he sat up and just looked at the blonde for a long moment, before giving a wave and leaning against Amy as he watched the newcomer. "And I'm Amy. Amy Pond," she introduced herself with a slight grin, shuffling over on the couch so there was room on it for him to sit if he wanted to. "I don't believe we've met."
